The Professional Beauty Association says the average haircut in America costs around $45 (American Salon magazine says it’s $21). However, when it comes to celebs other than Nick Nolte… there’s a bit of a price jump.

“That timeless look”

The price of the cut itself likely doesn’t reflect the value of upholding a timeless look while under the scrutiny of the public spotlight as is the case with many clients of the world’s top stylists. We’re not sure what percentage of the $30 billion global hair care market that even makes up considering the world’s most expensive cut is more than an average person would spend in a lifetime.

On the flip side of all of this high class coiffurey you’ll find people like President Obama monkeying things up with his $19 cut from Chicago’s Hyde Park Hair Salon. Who’s to say what’s too expensive though, Madonna might drop close to a grand on a haircut but do you see her flying around in a $50k+/hr military airplane? …we didn’t think so.

Without further ado, here are your fancy haircuts…

#5) $500 - …it’s a three way tie

Kicking off the top five we have a three-way tie at $500. Where can you drop this much to get that perfect look? John Frieda Salon in NYC, Jose Eber, or Christophe Salon, both found where else but Beverly Hills, CA.

Serge Normant is in high demand by Fashion Magazine for his hair creations at John Frieda Salon. He is booked regularly by fashion magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, W, and Allure to style their magazine covers. His clients include celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Hudson and Julia Roberts.

Jose Eber is known for Farrah Fawcett’s famous feather style. He has been styling hair for more than four decades of styling hair, for $500 he can give you a legendary style of your own.

Cristophe, the owner/master stylist of Cristophe Salon in Beverly Hills charges clients $500 for his services, which even include house-calls, or should we say, Air Force One-calls. Yes, that’s right Christophe made a special trip to LAX to get President Bill Clinton’s hair just right.

#4) $600 - Frederic Fekkai

Frederic Fekkai recently commented about his $600 haircuts, “You could argue that a first class airline or a four-star hotel is too expensive as well, if the service isn’t there.” His clients include celebrities such as Liv Tyler and Kim Basinger. They rely on Frederic Fekkai because his name has become a brand for beautiful hair. “My customers expect more than a haircut when they see me,” says Fekkai. “They leave with a unique, flattering, personalized look that is easy for them to maintain outside of my salon.”

#3) $800 - Sally Herchberger

Of the other stylists mentioned, Sally Herchberger is the only one who’s name is locked in with a “signature shaggy look.” This look happens to have made the grade with Sandra Bullock, Meg Ryan, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hillary Clinton & Tom Cruise. The truth is that in many cases celebrities are directed to a particular stylist by a photo shoot director and paid for by a PR firm. Despite this, stylists like Ms. Herchberger don’t fail to lay claim to their A-List affiliations. It may not be an issue for clients whether Sarah Jessica Parker sides with a particular stylist personally, but rather that the stylist is renowned as being world class and validated by their previous celebrity clientele. So regardless of if you’re charging up your Amex or if you’re haircuts are paid for by some PR firm, you can rest assured that you’re getting the professional service you paid for… movie deal not included.

#2. $800 - Orlando Pita

“Orlo” Orlando Pita http://cityfile.com/profiles/orlando-pita , a Cuban born hairstylist, opened this celebrity salon in the meatpacking district of New York City which despite the price, boasts a month’s long waiting list. Celeb clients include Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Hathaway, Oscar De La Renta, Vera Wang, Julianne Moore, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Connelly, and Naomi Campbell. He tops the list of high priced salons in NYC at $800 which include a cut and a 15 minute head massage. Between cutting and head-massaging, Orlo can be found either in NYC, or at his Miami home, or travelling to work on models for the likes of Versace, Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabanna, Valentino, Michael Kors, and others.

#1. $16,000 - Stuart Phillips

Who else could hold the number one spot than the salon that made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for Most Expensive Haircut? In London’s Covent Garden you will find Stuart Phillips Hair Salon, an establisment frequented by celebrites such as David Hasselhoff, Ivana Trump, Jean Claude Van Dam, & Kirsten Dunst. We should note that the regular haircut price is a mere $300 but on one particular occasion in October of 2007, Beverly Lateo, a retired millionaire from Pisa, Italy justified dropping $16k on a “package deal.” The cut itself only took an hour but for the entire two days Ms. Lateo spent in London, she enjoyed a wealth of VIP treatment. The package service itself included first class airfare from Italy to London, limo service from the airport to the salon, and a daylong engagement at the salon including a reserved VIP area, a Champagne lunch, a Shiatsu / Acupressure head & scalp massage, an assortment of personalized L’Oreal hair products, and personal haircutting lessons from Stuart Phillips himself. It doesn’t even stop there with higher level packages ranging from $40-80k which include additional services such as a personal concierge, airport escort service, two days at a top hotel in London, & a PRIVATE CHEF (!?)

I recently read an article about a creative idea to market your business by trying to create a “semi-celebrity” status for yourself. The article described it as becoming “slightly” famous. The idea is that you come up with a interesting or gimmicky way of delivering your services which will get people to stop and notice or will entice your existing customers to tell their friends about you. In today’s online, Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter world, it is not difficult to spread your name and profession around. But it is difficult to cut through the noice and get noticed. While I don’t think that techniques described in the article will be applicable to every profession it is not hard to see how a little creative thinking could help your Salon or independent Hair Stylist business.

StylistOne.com has added some new features this week. They have added the ability for professionals who are not hair stylists, but want to use the site to manage their appointments and to store their customer information. Just register on the site and uncheck the “hair stylist” box, this will give you access to generic services and customer information screens. There are already several new users on the site using it for their Fashion Stylist business and Custom Clothier businesses. If you would like to use it for your type of business, just send a note to their customer service email address.

Additional new features added this week include: Service Groups on your Profile Page, you can arrange your service offerings into groups and order the list of services anyway you like. Just drag and drop. You can also track those pesky “no-show” clients. On the Appointment Calendar click the no-show button, the system will keep track of how many times a client has not shown for an appointment so that you can view this on the Client Information page.

They have also added a new section to the Profile Page to let you enter an introduction about yourself and your business.

I recently read an article on Entrepreneur.com from late 2006, that talked about the growing trend of small businesses utilizing technology to improve their relationship with their customers. Although the article is a few years old, the message is still relevant, especially in this economy. Small businesses need to be doing whatever they can to find and retain customers. Technology can help.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools have been widely used by large businesses in their Sales, Marketing, and Billing Departments, but smaller businesses have had a more difficult time adopting client management software because it was either too costly or it wasn’t designed for their type of business and it was difficult and expensive to modify. Today there are niche applications and websites that cater to small businesses. Some of these, like StylistOne.com are specialized for a particular industry. StylistOne.com started out as a site for Hair Stylists to manage their appointments and keep in touch regularly with customers, but they have added features that expand the site for use by Fashion Stylists and Custom Clothiers. These technology tools enhance the client relationship and make it easier for customers to book an appointment with their stylist. How many times have I heard someone say, “I have to get my hair done, I need to call the salon.” StylistOne.com provides a personalized web page for each user that allows their customers to request appointments online. They have recently launched a mobile version where customers can request an appointment using their iPhone or Blackberry. As technology becomes more pervasive, service businesses that use these technology tools will have an advantage over their competition.

Greetings Stylists,
We’ve upgraded the StylistOne.com site with enhanced security for your data and your clients data protection. We have also upgraded the interface to make it easier to add clients and edit client information. Customers can now go to your public web page to request an appointment with you, based on your available times in the drop down list. This is not exactly the same as your paper appointment book in the salon, and it will take some getting used to, but the online version is very powerful. Once the appointment requests come in you can adjust them to fit your schedule and quickly email your customer if you need to make changes to their requested time slot.

If you have not yet signed up to use StylistOne.com, go online and give it a try. It’s free. We made it very easy to use and it’s a great way to manage your clients and your business.

Click here to get started with StylistOne.com!
